Line Severed: Talks Between Isles, Ehrhoff Break Down

Katie Strang of Newsday has reported that Christian Ehrhoff will not be signing with the Islanders, not before July 1 at least.

Either he feels he can get more money on the open market (personally, I think he's insane if that's what he's thinking) or it could have to do with the uncertainty surrounding the franchise. As optimistic as the fanbase might be, until August 1, we have no clue what's going to be, and a player isn't about to settle down here on LI just because the vote "should pass."

It's also entirely possible that Ehrhoff really likes the idea of taking Brian Rafalski's spot on the blueline in Detroit, something that has reportedly been offered by Red Wings GM Ken Holland.

Whatever the case, it's not likely that he'll change his mind, and that shouldn't stop the Isles' brass from focusing on the task at hand. There are still other players to be had on the market and Christian Ehrhoff, while definitely a good defenseman, isn't the only good one.

It can be through a trade or free agency, but Garth Snow is well aware that he needs to spend money to make this team more competitive and salary cap-compliant.

UPDATE 10:45 PM- The Islanders have shipped Ehrhoff's negotiating rights to the Buffalo Sabres in exchange for...you guessed it...a fourth round pick.
